First day
Hello.
I’m Martin Due. Window Four is me and nobody else, which explains the pace and probably a few other things about this site.
Right. The Bureau of Spherical Integrity.
You have a job. A sphere arrives at your window. You test it, you write down what the instrument says, and another one arrives. Everyone is unfailingly polite about it. You are thanked, often.
That’s the whole job. There is nothing else to do and nothing to get better at, and when I describe it out loud people wait for the rest of the sentence. There isn’t one.
What changes is everything around the job. The building. The wording on the forms. What the instruments are actually measuring. You notice it late, the way you notice a room has got darker.
I built the job first, on purpose, because I needed to know whether the dull part held up with nothing propping it up. If it didn’t there was no point doing the rest. I think it does. Or at least I keep meaning to stop after five minutes and then not stopping, which is about the only measure I trust this early.
The demo goes out when the first week of employment holds together start to finish. I’m not putting a month on it.
Anyway. That’s the first one of these.
